Making Sure You Have Building Insurance Isn’t Optional

Making Sure You Have Building Insurance…

It’s Part of Being a Responsible Homeowner

I want to share a quick story that’s been on my mind lately.

A relative of mine, lovely person, heart of gold, has decided that building insurance is “a scam”. Their logic is simple: “The house has stood for almost 180 years, nothing’s ever happened, why would it start now?”

And honestly, I get it. When the weather feels calm, the sun’s out, and life is ticking along nicely, insurance can feel like paying for a problem that doesn’t exist.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth: the world doesn’t work on our timetable.

Warm Weather Isn’t Always Friendly Weather

We’re seeing hotter, drier spells across the UK. That means:

  • Lightning strikes are more frequent in summer storms.
  • Wildfires yes, even in the UK, are becoming more common.
  • Drought-damaged ground can shift foundations.
  • Heat-related electrical faults can spark fires.

One bad hour of weather can undo many decades of “nothing’s ever happened”.

The Real Risk Isn’t Just Damage:  It’s What Comes After

If your home is damaged and you don’t have building insurance, you’re not just dealing with repair costs.

You’re dealing with:

  • Being temporarily (or permanently) homeless
  • Mortgage lenders demanding immediate repairs
  • Liability claims from neighbours if the damage spreads
  • Legal costs if someone alleges your property caused their loss
  • The emotional toll of trying to rebuild without support

Imagine a lightning strike hits your roof, sparks a fire, and spreads next door. Without insurance, you’re suddenly responsible for your home and their home. That’s not a scam that’s a financial catastrophe.

Building Insurance Isn’t About Fear

It’s about good outcomes.

It’s about making sure that if life throws something unexpected at you, you’re not left scrambling, borrowing, or fighting legal battles.

It’s about protecting:

  • Your home
  • Your family
  • Your neighbours
  • Your financial stability
  • Your peace of mind

And yes, it’s about avoiding the kind of nightmare that turns a warm summer day into a long-term crisis.

A Final Thought

My relative still thinks insurance is unnecessary. But the irony is this: the only time you realise how essential it is… is the moment you desperately need it.

If you own a home, especially in today’s unpredictable climate, building insurance isn’t a luxury. It’s a responsibility.

And it’s one of the simplest ways to make sure you’re never left picking up the pieces alone.
