When Helping Too Much Hurts Growth

As a business mentor, my role is to guide, challenge, and support my clients so they can achieve their own breakthroughs.
But here’s the truth I had to face recently: sometimes, I step too far into the arena with them.

I get caught up in their mission, their urgency, their momentum. I jump in to solve problems, write the plan, make the call.
And for a moment, it feels great — we’re moving fast, getting things done.

But then something subtle happens.
They take a small step back.
They wait for me to lead the next move.
And the sense of ownership — the vital muscle that will carry their business forward — begins to weaken.

I’ve learned that mentoring isn’t about doing the work for them.
It’s about creating the space, the challenge, and the accountability so they can rise into their own leadership.

The best mentors know when to step forward… and when to step back.
Because if I’m holding the steering wheel for too long, I’m not mentoring anymore — I’m driving their business.

Sometimes the most powerful thing I can do for a client is… stop helping so much.
